Claudio Vargas, the bullpen is calling you...

He was facing the Giants, at home, on a Monday, but despite those favorable factors it's impossible for us to describe Brewer rookie Yovani Gallardo's debut as anything other than impressive. He went 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, while walking three and striking out four. That's a good line, mind you, but it doesn't do justice to Gallardo's performance. Two of his walks were issued to Barry Bonds (you can't really blame the guy for working around him), and after a somewhat rocky start - he threw 30-plus pitches in the first - Gallardo settled down and allowed just one hit over the next four frames.

He relied mostly on his curveball - a little too much, says ESPN's Keith Law - but once he began featuring his changeup, he was all but unhittable for every Giant not named Bonds. We have no idea what this means, of course. The Giants are the Giants, and Gallardo next pitches at home, on Sunday, against...the Royals.
