Fantasy nerds assemble, it could be Gallardo time

If the above headline doesn't mean anything to you then you probably won't get much out of this post. Sorry. But a funny thing happened along the way to last night's Brewers/Tigers contest. Milwaukee starter Chris Capuano was scratched moments before the game was to begin, and Carlos Villanueva took the mound instead. Villanueva pitched effectively, going five innings while allowing only one earned run on five hits in his longest appearance of the season.

That's not the news. What's relevant here is Capuano is likely headed to the DL, and his absence finally opens the door for heralded prospect Yovani Gallardo to join the Brewers rotation. Gallardo has been a buzzsaw thus far in the minors. He's currently 8-3 with a 2.90 ERA with 110 strikeouts in 77.2 innings for Triple-A Nashville. And the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal is reporting that the Brewers are bringing Gallardo up to pitch against the Giants on Monday, a move that will delight fantasy owners around the world, who were all silently hoping for someone on the Milwaukee staff to fall victim to injury sooner or later.

Expect to hear plenty about Gallardo over the next few days, both on Baseball Tonight and every fantasy chatroom you can find. But we're not anticipating a Francisco Lariano-type year from Gallardo, considering his fellow rookies Tim Lincecum and Homer Bailey have each had mixed results in their short stints in the Bigs. We'll say he goes 7-4, with a 3.50 ERA and 120 strikeouts. Book it.
